Sexual well-being is an essential component of
self-development. Where it is unaddressed in the therapeutic process,
clients miss the opportunity to work with this important aspect of
themselves and reach their full emotional and relational potential.
Sexuality provides a doorway into a wealth of issues,
including self-esteem and self-expression, creativity, and relational
abilities such as communication, intimacy and the capacity to give and
receive love.
Therapists and counselors must be able to walk with
clients in a skillful and knowledgeable way through the terrain of
their sexual wounding so that sexual well-being will be part of a
positive therapeutic outcome.
This learning experience will provide a thoughtful and
confidential group for therapists and counselors in which you can
expand your knowledge, skill and comfort level in dealing with
sexuality issues as they arise in the therapeutic setting.
Sexuality issues will be presented in a holistic
framework, including physical, cognitive, emotional and spiritual
aspects. The theoretical orientation of this series will include
body-centered therapy and the spiritual significance of sexuality. The
learning format will include a variety of didactic methods, including
case studies and discussion.
Discussion topics will be determined by group interest,
but the following issues offer some possible focus for the sessions:
- Sexuality and intimacy
- Lack of desire or sexual interest
- Issues of sexual dysfunction
- Power and love
- Communications skills
- Helping clients explore their sexual orientation
- Sexuality as a metaphor for life
- Exploring the interplay between sexuality and
spirituality
- Boundaries and transference
- Looking at your own values, biases and prejudices
regarding
sexual issues
- Maintaining your own sexual and relational
well-being when working with clients who have experienced sexual abuse
and/or abusive
relationships
Reading material will be provided and readings assigned
as
homework for the sessions.
If you haven’t worked with Madeline before, an interview
is required for admission into this series.
