Where Spirituality and Psychotherapy Meet

Explores the possibility of expanding the field of psychological inquiry beyond normality and adaptation to encompass expanded states of awareness and a "beyond self" way of being in the world. It may include religious expression but more often it is recognized as the uniting force in the universe that lives within each of us, that draws us out and beyond our ego identification, into the bigger world of creativity, mystery, and inter-dependence.

Where Spirituality and Psychotherapy Meet will give participants perspective that thoughtfully considers the issues involved in integrating spiritual dimensions within their therapeutic practice. It will also be an opportunity to share and learn from others who are exploring bringing spiritual concepts and practices into the therapeutic process.

This workshop is appropriate for all mental health practitioners including psychologists, psychotherapists, counsellors, social workers, coaches, and others in the allied healing professions who have an interest in the spiritual dimensions of counselling and a desire to increase their competency and confidence integrating a spiritual dimension to their work.

Topics for discussion:

  • Assessing the risks and benefits for each client or introducing spiritual perspectives into the therapeutic process
  • Conducting a spiritual assessment
  • Role of family of origin's religious philosophy and practices and its impact on psychological well-being.
  • Honouring the unique rhythm and pace of each person's spiritual/emotional journey - recognized steps in spiritual development
  • Exploring one's own bias and assumptions about religion and spirituality
  • Spirituality and the body
  • Spiritual tools and techniques
  • Discussion of therapeutic issues that may evolve a spiritual focus
